The Bioclone hydrophobic magnetic resins have been developed with the aim of providing an efficient and reliable solution for the separation of target molecules. These magnetic beads are specially designed with a high density of hydrophobic ligands on their surface, which makes them highly uniform and rigid polymeric beads. With their covalent surface chemistries, they offer greater physical and chemical stability, thereby making the production process robust and more manageable.
The use of Bioclone hydrophobic magnetic resins eliminates the need for the time-consuming and expensive chromatographic techniques such as agarose, cellulose, Sepharose, Sephadex-based columns or resins. These hydrophobic magnetic beads are made using nanometer-scale superparamagnetic iron oxide as core and are entirely encapsulated by a high purity silica shell. This ensures that there are no leaching problems associated with the iron oxide. Moreover, the pure inert silica results in less nonspecific binding, making the separation process even more effective.
BcMag™ C-4 Magnetic Beads, as shown in the figure below, are notably smaller in size compared to other alternatives, ranging from 1 to 5 µm in diameter. Their non-porous nature provides a much larger surface area, resulting in less nonspecific binding and higher resolution than porous supports. These beads are particularly effective in isolating larger molecular weight proteins and peptides. Moreover, this less retentive phase enables the rapid release of hydrophobic molecules by using weaker organic solvents.
