Staphylococcus epidermidis is a bacterium that is commonly found on human skin and mucous membranes. While it is generally considered a commensal organism, it can also cause infections, particularly in patients with implanted medical devices. To cause infections, S. epidermidis has developed a variety of virulence factors, including immunodominant antigen A, secretory antigen, and serine threonine-rich antigen.

Immunodominant antigen A is a surface protein of S. epidermidis that is known to elicit an immune response in humans. It is considered a potential vaccine candidate due to its ability to induce protective antibodies in animal models. Research has also shown that immunodominant antigen A is expressed in most S. epidermidis strains, suggesting that it may play a conserved role in the biology of this bacterium.

Secretory antigen is a protein of S. epidermidis that is involved in the secretion of proteins into the extracellular environment. It is considered an important virulence factor, as it is involved in the formation of biofilms and the colonization of host tissues. Research has also shown that secretory antigen is involved in the regulation of genes that are important for the survival of S. epidermidis under stress conditions.

Serine threonine-rich antigen is a protein of S. epidermidis that contains multiple repeats of serine and threonine amino acids. It is considered an important virulence factor, as it is involved in the adherence of S. epidermidis to host tissues. Research has also shown that serine threonine-rich antigen is involved in the formation of biofilms and the regulation of genes that are important for the survival of S. epidermidis in the host environment.

Overall, immunodominant antigen A, secretory antigen, and serine threonine-rich antigen are important virulence factors of S. epidermidis. Understanding the function of these proteins may lead to the development of novel therapeutics or vaccines for the prevention and treatment of S. epidermidis infections, particularly those associated with medical device implants.

The use of recombinant proteins/cDNA in academic research and therapeutic applications has skyrocketed. However, in heterologous expression systems, successful recombinant protein expression is dependent on a variety of factors, including codon preference, RNA secondary structure, and GC content. When compared to pre-optimization, more and more experimental results demonstrated that the expression level was dramatically increased, ranging from two to hundred times depending on the gene. Bioclone has created a proprietary technology platform that has resulted in the creation of over 6,000 artificially synthesized codon-optimized cDNA clones (cloned in E. coli expression Vector), which are ready for production of the recombinant proteins.

Staphylococcus epidermidis cDNA and recombinant antigens can be used to develop diagnostic tests for the detection of Staphylococcus epidermidis infections. Diagnostic tests can be used to identify individuals who are infected with the bacteria, as well as monitor the response to treatments. In addition, Staphylococcus epidermidis cDNA and recombinant antigens can be used to develop vaccines to protect individuals from developing infections. Vaccination is an effective way to prevent certain types of illnesses and reduce the spread of infections.
